So today's word is 信号

Reads: shin-gou
Means: signal

This means usually traffic signals.

Example sentence:

・日本人 は 緑信号 を 青信号 と 呼ぶ。

/ni-hon-jin wa midori-shin-gou o ao-shin-gou to yo-bu/

…Japanese people call green signals "blue signals"

This is what most Japanese are wondering.

Japanese signals have "green", "yellow" and "red", too.

But we say "青信号" though it's green.

Then I asked Mr. Google why we say "blue" to see "green"?

He answered

"Long time ago, Japanese words used to have only

red, blue, white and black for colors. So they call the

colors between blue and green 'blue'. So it's just

remains from ancient Japan to call green blue"

Surprisingly, Japanese didn't have no words but

"red", "blue", "white" and "black"!!

Even Japanese people don't know the fact, absolutely!!

If you have any Japanese friends, ask them if they

know that.

You might be able to teach them about Japan to Japanese!! Hehe

So I explain about the grammars used in the sentence.

👉日本人(ni-hon-jin)

日本 means "Japan"
人 means "person"

So 日本人 means "Japanese people"

Other examples:

アメリカ人
/amerika jin/
... Americans

ロシア人
/roshia jin/
... Russian people

ドイツ人
/doitsu jin/
...German people

フランス人
/furans jin/
... French people

オランダ人
/oranda jin/
... people in Netherlands

イギリス人
/igiris jin/
... people in UK

インド人
/indo jin/
... Indian people

👉緑信号/midori- shin- gou/

緑 means green.
信号 means signals.

But we don't say 緑信号, but 青信号.

Red signals are 赤信号/aka- shin- gou/
Yellow signals are 黄信号/ki- shin- gou/

👉青信号/ao- shin- gou/

青 means blue.

And strange to say, 青信号 means "green signals"

👉呼ぶ(yo-bu)

This means "to call''

AをBと呼ぶ means "we call A B"

When you "call" someone with loud voice, it also

meams "呼ぶ"

But when you "call" with the telephone, it means

"電話する" /den- wa suru/

電話 means "telephone"

電 means "electricity"
話 means "story" and "to talk"

That's all explanations.

Today's sentence was not so confusing as usual.

Thank you so much for reading.

Ask me if you have any questions.

I hope this helps you a lot.

See you next time~
