#17 What does mean 終電? ~ Japanese people like a secret base??~
2019. 1. 2
Hello everyone.
How are you?
It's kÜshi.
Thank you for coming here.
I hope this helps you a lot!
🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵
So today's word is 終電
Reads: shyuu-den
Means: last train
Example sentence:
・もし 終電 を 逃したら、カプセルホテル に 泊まる こと が できる。
/moshi shuu-den o noga-shitara, kapuseru-hoteru ni to-maru koto ga dekiru/
If you miss the last train, you can stay in the capsule hotel.
Mr. Google says " A capsule hotel is very unique to Japan"
I was surprised to hear that, because it doesn't look so unique...., I think XD
Some people from foreign countries say "it looks like a secret base!!"
"What lovely thinking you have!!!"
I thought hehe XD
Japanese people don't usually use that to have fun, but use that when they miss the last train and can't go back home.
Don't worry, you can get WiFi there though you can't on the many streets in Japan XD
So I explain about the grammars used in the sentence!!
👉もし(moshi)
This means "if"
👉終電(shuu-den)
This means the last train.
終(shyuu) means like "finish", or "last"
電(den) means "electricity"
So 終電 means "last electricity"?!
No way XD
電車(den-sha) means "train"
So 終電車 must be correct, but it's long (isn't it? Yes it is!), so we shorten it and we say 終電.

👉逃したら(noga-shitara)
The origin of the phrase is 逃す(noga-su), which means to miss.
So then, what's this phrase? How is it made? How is it used?
Ok so first I explain how to make the phrase from verbs.
To make the phrase, two steps should be taken.
(ⅰ) Make a past form
(ⅱ)put ら after the past form
(ⅱ) is very easy, but (ⅰ) is a little confusing.
I give you examples.
食べる(ta-beru)...to eat
食べた(ta-beTA)...ate
話す(hana-su)...to talk
話した(hana-shiTA)...talked
見る(mi-ru)...to see
見た(mi-TA)...saw
読む(yo-mu)...to read
読んだ(yo-mDA)...read
書く(ka-ku)...to write
書いた(ka-iTA)...wrote
泣く(na-ku)...to cry
泣いた(na-iTA)...cried
する(suru)...to do
した(shiTA)...did
来る(ku-ru)...to come
来た(ki-TA)...came
泳ぐ(oyo-gu)...to swim
泳いだ(oyo-iDA)...swam
聞く(ki-ku)...to hear
聞いた(ki-iTA)...heard
走る(hashi-ru)...to run
走った(hashi-TTA)...ran
作る(tsuku-ru)...to make
作った(tsuku-TTA)...made
As you see, to make a past form, basically you put た at the end, but you also change the verbs' forms as well.
The changing is difficult because there's few rules.
Even Japanese people can't explain why "い" is put like 泣いた and 書いた.
So all you have to do is get used to the changing.
You can practice enough on my sites. I'm making them to be so.
Then when you make the past form, you next put ら. Just that.
So they'd be like these:
食べたら
話したら
見たら
・
・
・
That's simple.
So next, how are they used?
It's easy.
They're used with もし, which means "if"
And it means "if you do ~~"
For example,
・もし 食べたら 怒るよ
/moshi ta-betara oko-ru yo/
If you eat, I'll get angry
→怒る(oko-ru) means to get angry
・彼 が 来たら 行こう
/kare ga ki-tara i-kou/
When he comes, let's go.
→彼(kare) means "he"
→行く(i-ku) means "to go"
And 行こう means "let's go"
I'll explain about the form of "let's~" on another site.
If you don't say もし, but say just 見たら/食べたら/来たら/・・・ it means like "when~"
So もし彼が来たら means "if he comes"
But 彼が来たら means "when he comes"
So もし終電を逃したら means
"If you miss the last train"
👉カプセルホテルに(kapuseru-hoteru ni)
And に means like "in", "on", "at", "to"
For example,
海に…in the sea
電車に…on the train
駅に…to the station
As I explained on my 16th site, で means samely like "in", "on", "at".
に follows fewer verbs, which are いる, ある, 行く, 来る. I said so on my 16th site. And 泊まる can be also put after に.
So カプセルホテルに泊まる is a correct form, and it means to stay IN the capsule hotel.

👉泊まる(to-maru)
This means to stay overnight.
👉泊まる こと が できる(to-maru koto ga dekiru)
できる means "possible"
And 泊まること is a noun of 泊まる. When you put こと after verbs, you can make them nouns.
So 泊まることができる means like "staying is possible" so it means "you can stay"
That's all explanations.
Now you can translate the sentence!
もし終電を逃したら、カプセルホテルに泊まることができる, this means
"If you miss the last train, you can stay in the capsule hotel"
So that's all today.
Thank you so much for reading.
Ask me if you have any questions.
I hope this helps you a lot.
See you next time~!
